Merchant of Venice

Chanel's cruise 2010 collection was launched last November on the stunning Lido beach in Venice.

"Venice has a genuine dark and mysterious side to it that fascinated me. I really like the Italian spirit and the Venetian lifestyle...and let’s not forget that Coco Chanel came back to Venice for 10 years.” - Lagerfeld
Hair: 30s bobs
Make up: fresh faced and smokey eyes
Runway: boardwalk
Front row: wooden deck chairs
Soundtrack: Something à la Mode by Rondo Parisiano Ft. Karl Lagerfeld
Key themes: pirate-esque, sailor dresses, open-toe wedge boots, gondola stripes
Fabrics: sourced from "the rich reds of the Renaissance, Fortuny's prints, and the chiaroscuro technique of the great Italian masters"
Guests: about 350, including notable Venetians such as the Countess Brandino Brandolini and the Count and Countess Luca Marzotto
Vibe: understated
Influences: subtly Venetian (black sunglasses, gold brocade and lamé lace adorned dresses), the lion (emblem of Venice & also Coco Chanel's birth sign) appeared in print on flowy sepia-toned chiffon dresses
Pre-show: lounging in the sun on Hotel Europa's terrace
Souvenir: guests took home a Chanel beach towel

My highlights...

Italian actress Vittoria Puccini, actress and Chanel muse Anna Mouglalis, Italian actress Kasia Smutniak and Japanese actress Rinko Kikuchi with Lagerfeld
